I can remember seeing Vavi walking through the halls of my old primary school. She was a student just like the rest of us. But she was somehow special. ‘Did you know that she has written a book?’ one of my old friends asked me once. Of course I didn’t know. Until then. From that moment Vavi has become one of my biggest inspirations and I still can’t believe the fact that she published her own book at the age of only fifteen. Now she’s a student at LEAF Academy in Bratislava and I had the opportunity to ask her a few questions.
What inspires you in writing?
I’ve been inspired by J.K.Rowling since my childhood. Her books are amazing and it was the Harry Potter series what encouraged me to start writing my first story called “Škola animgágov” when I was eleven. Nowadays, I find inspiration in current affairs and the people around me. Different movies and books can set off emotions as well. And suddenly… there is an idea!

On which occasion did you start writing your first book?
I was on vacation in the UK with my family, visiting some old colleges and Universities there. Maybe something there reminded me of Potter´s books and gave me inspiration… I don´t know precisely. However, it was the moment when I got the idea. It took me, however, a long time to put it into a completed form.

How did you come up with the name for it (Pokrvní)?
Sometimes the book title is the hardest thing to come up with, but with Pokrvní, it was very easy. I think it was the first thing about the story which was created. I knew there will be a lineage with a special ability to transform into other animals named “Pokrvní”.

When did you finish the book?
Pokrvní was finished in 2014, published a few months later (in 2015).

Was there a time when you just wanted to quit?
Sure, more times actually. But I always continued after some time. You just need to have feelings for it.

Is it sometimes difficult for you to get through laziness?
Yes, maybe it´s not laziness, but tiredness. I have moments when I cannot do anything, because I just want to sleep or procrastinate. I am a human being as others are, but I feel very angry on myself when I am not doing anything. I consider myself a workaholic.

Are you working on something new?
Yes, I have ideas for 4 new books, however, I still don´t know if they will be published. It´s up in the air. One is the third part of Pokrvní series (Venile - Biely havran- third part), others are new.

What would you like to do after high school?
I hope I will continue with my studies for the next few years at University, and then I would love to be more into journalism and the non-profit sector.

Would you recommend LEAF Academy for other kids like you?
I would recommend LEAF Academy to students who like to study in a meaningful way. Not everything is perfect, of course, and there are some things you need to give up after coming to Academy. However, this school is a place where teachers are your friends and you can experience lots of discussions and opportunities. I am honestly grateful that I can be here.

Have you ever tried writing poetry?
Yes, I tried, but I need to feel the right way to write poetry. I am more like an “epic” type of person, I prefer stories.
